Horsetooth Mountain is a Notorious Landmark for Northern Colorado

Northern Colorado is notorious for many landmarks such as Horsetooth Mountain, where you can hike and take up some fresh air via bicycle. Other recreational activities such as swimming, boating and paddle boarding are yet another benefit to living in the area. The manmade project is part of the off-stream waters of the Big Thompson Project providing fresh water to residence and businesses. It’s also a vital source of water for our agricultural industry.

You’ll find a few ways to get to the 156,700-acre body of water to be easily accessible by taking Taft, Harmony or Shields. Constructed in the 1940s, the 6.5 mile long reservoir is a ‘hot spot’ during the summer months when residents and visitors take a dive into the 188-foot-deep body of water. The elevation may challenge some as the location is at the foothills just West of Fort Collins and has an elevation of over 5400 feet. However, if you can handle the thinning air, you’ll love all the possibilities as it’s one of Larimer County’s best places for Summer activity.  

Spend Your Day Fishing By Boat or Shoreline

Fishing on the reservoir provides a day of rest and relaxation. If your luck is good you may lure bass, trout and possibly catfish. No boat? No worries, as you can catch plenty of fish right from the shore. Many of our angle men and women suggest using grubs, live bait and worms to attract the fish. However, we’ve seen some caught with dough balls and store bought baiting techniques. More importantly, Horsetooth Reservoir is a NOCO Best spot for fishing from Spring to Fall.  

Wildlife and Humans Revel in this Sanctuary

While human visitors love this FOCO landmark, the wildlife also enjoys the water. You may see the forest provides a sanctuary for plenty of animals. You may spot mule deer, fox, or an occasional black bear nearing the water’s edge. While the bear are more of a nuisance than threat, we also know mountain lions frequent the area. Not too many worries as these cats stay away from the noisy crowds and will normally stay away.  

Birdwatching is a Serious Pastime at Horsetooth Reservoir

Birding is yet another activity where birdwatchers can take in a full day spotting a variety of species. The Horsetooth Reservoir is part of 44 protected natural areas where you’ll find bald eagles, owls and beautiful songbirds. Did you know?  

“According to a 2011 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service report, birders spent an estimated $41 billion within the year on trip-related expenses and equipment.” This is a true benefit and amazing boost helping our flourishing economy.

Some of these creatures are at the rehabilitation of the Outdoor Rocky Mountain Raptor Center. Get an up close contact with some native fowl or raptors who are recovering from injuries and are on display.

Things to Know About the Park 

Parking can be a challenge when making your plans, where leaving early is necessary. Once you arrive at any of the entrances, you’ll also need to have patience as many people come and go throughout the day. When the lots are full they will shut down boat launches and picnic areas until the capacity is lighter. You may end up without access at all on busy days and holidays which is why we are placing the warning for making a head start. However, when you’re there you’ll be happy taking in such an incredible landscape and a dip in the water.

Homes and properties near Horsetooth Reservoir include single-family residences where you’ll usually have some land. If you’re lucky enough to find a home overlooking the water, jump on it as these properties won’t list for long. You can expect prices to be $399,000 and higher for the lots at Fort Collins. Occasionally, you’ll find homes in the million-dollar range and land to invest and build. Properties with a view may mean paying more, but it’s worthwhile for many investors. Working with an experienced agent familiar with the area can help to know important details such as building codes. Nonetheless, there’s several areas along the Horsetooth ideal for building dreams.  

The Properties Found Here Offer Secluded Distances from Your Neighbors

The properties found here are not in a subdivision where your neighbors may be at some distance. Sometimes, this is what the homeowner prefers. However, the value is a convenient location as Horsetooth Reservoir isn’t a far drive into town where there’s plenty of shopping.
